Bad Poetry, sorry…kind of.

Why Do I Bother?

By KAri Jensen, 2019

I arise in the morning before the dawn

Drink coffee and sit and watch for birds,

Count crows; the first, second and thirds,

Think about tasks ahead and yawn.

Why do I bother?

I launch into functions, both high and low,

Wake up the child, it’s time to get moving

Have breakfast, then school; our daily grooving

Check email, check news, check financial flow.

Why do I bother?

I have to get painting, clock ticking, no snacking,

Make something, do something, keep working hard,

A moment to work in; a broken glass shard

From the mirror I’m lost in, it’s old edges cracking.

Why do I bother?

I get it all done, started and finished

Pick up the kids, then fed, cleaned and down

They become kinder, smarter and grown,

They’re off and away, yet I’m not diminished.

Why do I bother?

The in-between moments, the hugs, loving gaze,

Healing their hurt makes space in my heart

To care for myself which comes out in the art.

The art is my journal; it’s a map of my days.

They were never a bother.
